Emily Miao, Ph. D. He is a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP and chairs the company's Startups & Entrepreneurs Practice Group. Dr. Miao is a client counsel on patent, trademark, copyright procurement and portfolio management, effectiveness, infringement, freedom-to-operate (fto), due diligence review, and patent strategy. She represents many companies, both large and small, and universities, particularly entrepreneurs, in prosecution, counseling, licensing, and IP portfolio management. He is experienced in representing start-ups, and early-stage companies. He has been involved in industrial catalytic processes, semiconductor devices, sensors, materials, medical devices, nanotechnology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic systems, molecular biology, drug delivery systems, organic chemistry, and purification processes.

Dr. Miao is a speaker, moderator, or panelist at industry events related to intellectual property. She also serves as a jury member for Northwestern University's Venture Challenge and entrepreneurial idol events. Dr. Miao has been a mentor at Chicago Innovation Mentor (CIM) and Matter Chicago's CIM for more than 6 years, and has worked at more than 3 start-ups and early-stage companies, including 14 companies that served as mentor team leaders.  She has also conducted numerous IP workshops in MATTER Chicago related to sponsored research contracts, trade secrets and patent processes. Dr. Miao is also a member of the group Genius at Smarthealth Activator, an incubator that supports and promotes university spin-off ventures in the northern and Midwest regions of Chicago. As a mentor, she has frequently worked with companies on issues related to intellectual property, such as issues related to the protection of intellectual property assets and intellectual property-related agreements, including licensing and research agreements. He is a member of the Advisory Committee. Dr. Miao also serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the Chicago Kent College of Law Patent Hub.
