Robert Abrams (Bob) is the co-founder and executive partner of Abrams Fensterman, LLP, a New York Law Journal Top 100 law firm located in Lake Success, New York, with branches in Brooklyn, Manhattan, White Plains, Rochester and Albany.
When Bob started his law firm, he developed several areas of practice, including the Right to Aging and Longevity, which includes areas of legal practice such as guardianship, life and retirement planning, inheritance litigation and medical law. Both directly and indirectly, as an executive partner of Abrams Fensterman, Bob participated in many high-profile cases, some of which helped to create and/or clarify existing legislation.
In addition to his diverse legal skills, Bob has demonstrated tremendous sensitivity and understanding of the issues faced by family members of murder victims, as evidenced by his representation of the families of Kathleen McCormack Durst, John Frankowski Sr. and Joseph“Joey" Comunale. Bob has developed a boutique practice that focuses on common law offenses and the loss of the right to burial, which is defined as “the right of next of kin to find solace and solace in the act of burying a loved one”"
Recognized for his considerable experience and leadership qualities, Bob has been called a «Pillar of Knowledge” and a „National Treasure“. Bob served as Chairman of the Seniors' Law and Health Law Sections of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). Bob had the unique honor of being the guest editor of the historical issue of the NYSBA magazine for 2011, which was called „Are you Ready for senior years?”, and the numbers for 2017, which was called the “Dementia Crisis». More than 100,000 people have read these special issues of NYSBA magazine.
Bob was twice invited to attend the White House Conference on Aging, which is held once a decade (WHCoA), the first of which was organized by President Bill Clinton in 1995, and the second by President George W. Bush in 2005. At the 2005 conference, Bob coordinated the first-ever WHCoA technology exhibition, which featured technology initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of older people in America and around the world.
A prolific educator and writer, Bob has presented educational programs to advocates, healthcare professionals, and consumers across the United States. Bob has given presentations at many prestigious organizations, including the American Health Association; the National Academy of Senior Lawyers; the American Bar Association; the Arizona Health Association; the Rhode Island Health Association; the California Association of Medical Institutions and the National Association of State Veterans Homes. Most recently, Bob was selected to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Association for Continuing Legal Education for his educational programs sponsored by the NYSBA, titled «Dementia Science and Law» and «Aging and Longevity Law».
In addition, Bob was the editor or author of the following resources: The Practice of Guardianship in the State of New York, which outlines the repeal of guardianship laws in New York and the enactment of Section 81 of the Mental Hygiene Act; a joint project with the Medical Society of the State of New York entitled «Legal Guide for New York Physicians»; and, at the direction of the Honorable Jonathan Lippman, Chief Justice of the State of New York, a Legal Guide to Emergency Preparedness in the Field of Public Health. In 2000, Bob co-authored the book «The Basics of the Boomer», published by McGraw Hill and dedicated to personal, financial and medical problems that affect baby boomers, their parents and children. In 2009, Bob wrote «Diluted Truth: A Stream of Lies More Deadly than Hurricane Katrina.» This book has won numerous awards for its fascinating and truthful account of how and why 35 patients drowned in their Nursing Home during Hurricane Katrina.
Bob created the Law Institute of Aging and Longevity and the LLM program on the Law of Aging and Longevity for the Touro Law Center — a master's program designed for lawyers interested in the law of aging and longevity. The LLM Program on the Law of Aging and Longevity was designed to provide lawyers and other professionals with the information and resources they need to serve 100 million Americans aged 50 and older. The LLM program will cover a wide range of educational topics, including disability, adult children with special needs, bankruptcy, privacy, emergency preparedness, estate planning and management, financial planning, grandparents' rights, mental health issues, retirement, taxes and many others. As the LLM program grows, plans include a program of studies on the law and public policy in the field of longevity and aging law.
Bob defined the Aging and Longevity Act as follows“ «A confluence of several major areas of law that individually and collectively address various legal issues and related life circumstances that affect many of the ever-evolving and growing demographic of 100 million Americans who are approximately 50 years old and older.»
Bob received his law degree from the evening department of New York Law School. While attending law school in the evenings, Bob worked as an administrator in a nursing home. He passed the New York State Nursing Home license exam the same year he passed the bar exam. He received a Master's degree in Public Administration from New York University, which included coursework done at Fresno State University of the California University System. Bob graduated with honors from Brooklyn College, where he received a bachelor's degree in special education.
