Prior to becoming an attorney, Mr. McBeth served in the United States Army for 8 years, working as a military intelligence analyst and a drill sergeant. Following his discharge from military service, Mr. McBeth proved himself to be an enthusiastic student of the law. He graduated with a BA in Legal Studies from American Military University, achieving a GPA of 3.97. He then went on to seek his J.D. from the University of Richmond T.C. Williams School of Law as a John Marshall Scholar (the law schools most prestigious scholarship program, limited to 8% of his incoming class).During his time in law school, Mr. McBeth earned a number of academic achievements, including serving as an Articles and Comments Editor for the University of Richmond Law Review, membership in the McNeill Law Society (an honor reserved for law students ranked in the top 10% of their class), publishing several articles in legal journals, and becoming a national champion in negotiation skills, as well as a regional finalist in trial skills and tactics. Mr. McBeth graduated 2nd in his class and was recognized for his demonstrated excellence in academics by being admitted to the Order of the Coif and for his demonstrated excellence in legal advocacy skills by being admitted to the Order of the Barristers. Notably, he also received the Charles T. Norman Award, the award given by the University to the best overall graduating student as determined by the law school faculty and administration.
Mr. McBeth began his legal practice at a large Richmond-area law firm in 2011 and subsequently joined a boutique firm, where he specialized in defending malpractice and constitutional claims. During this time, Mr. McBeth also represented veterans seeking relief under the Federal Tort Claims Act in federal court and obtained significant recoveries on their behalf. It was also at this time that Mr. McBeth began teaching courses on federal pretrial practice and procedure at the University of Richmond School of Law as an adjunct faculty member, and continues to do so through present day.
Now, as an attorney with the Halperin Law Center, Mr. McBeth focuses his practice on representing those deprived of their constitutional rights by state and federal employees, with a focus on claims alleging violations of the Fourth Amendment, Eighth Amendment, and Fourteenth Amendment. Through his practice, Mr. McBeth has acquired extensive experience litigating police misconduct issues such as false arrests, malicious prosecutions, and unlawful uses of excessive force. He has also become adept at litigating cases involving unconstitutional conditions of incarceration, to include cases involving the failure to provide constitutionally adequate medical care or ameliorate unreasonable risks of institutional violence or abuse. Mr. McBeth also practices in the areas of products liability, premises liability, and medical malpractice.
Since joining the Halperin Law Center, Mr. McBeth has consistently achieved significant, life-changing results for his clients through his work ethic, creativity, and strategic thinking. Specifically, since joining the firm in late 2015, Mr. McBeths work has yielded millions of dollars in settlements on behalf of his clients. Most notably, Mr. McBeth also litigated a complex products liability case to verdict in federal court with the firms founder, Jonathan Halperin, which resulted in the jury awarding the firms client over $37,000,000.00 in compensatory damages.
