Chuck Smith has represented a broad array of U.S. and international companies, as well as their top executives, in complex regulatory investigations and litigation.
Mr. Smith has advised corporations and individuals in many regulatory and internal investigation matters, including enforcement matters before the SEC, CFTC, FINRA, the Department of Justice, and international and state regulators. This work has included a number of high-profile investigations under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He has represented a major financial exchange, manufacturers, medical device companies and many other clients in investigations, transaction due diligence and training on compliance matters.
Separately, Mr. Smith has represented financial services firms and other corporate and individual parties in SEC, DOJ, CFTC and FINRA enforcement matters. Among these clients are Bank of America, CME Group, Ameriprise Financial and a senior executive of Huron Consulting Group.
Mr. Smith is also an experienced trial lawyer, having tried many cases in federal and state courts around the country. These cases typically involve complex securities, accounting, financial or bankruptcy-related issues. He has represented many companies and their officers and directors in securities and derivative litigation, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Sprint Corporation and Aon Corporation.
Mr. Smith is the office attorney development partner. He is a recipient of the 2012 Spirit of Justice Award by Appleseed and Chicago Appleseed, which recognizes his exceptional achievements in social justice and government effectiveness. He also is a frequent speaker at seminars on compliance topics. Mr. Smith is vice chair of the board of trustees of Knox College, in Galesburg, Ill., and is a director of the Chicago Bar Foundation. In 2012, he was selected by the board of trustees of the University of Chicago to serve on its Law School Visiting Committee. The committee? comprised of judges, senior corporate executives and practicing lawyers? advises the law school on strategic matters.
