Gavin J. O'Keefe - Lawyer in Chicago, IL

Gavin J. O'Keefe is the current managing partner of McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP and serves as a member of the company's management committee.  He also helps lead the company's Prosecutorial Advisory Committee, which oversees and advises the company on prosecutorial-related procedures and best practices.

Mr. O'Keefe specializes in the field of computer hardware and software and has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in various technical fields. He serves a diverse group of clients and works with foreign peers around the world to help build and maintain a global patent portfolio.

Many of these clients rely on Mr. O'Keefe to manage a large patent portfolio.  He currently oversees and is responsible for the liaison of key external advisors for multiple large portfolios, including more than 1,000 applications and issued patents, and is routinely asked by clients to prosecute particularly important patent applications, such as those of families subject to patent infringement litigation. He has also argued and won multiple appeals (with or without oral hearings) before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB).

As part of the patent practice, Mr. O'Keefe is also an internationally renowned consumer for the years of dozens of inventions, he harvests sessions with engineers and other inventors who are familiar with his client's products and services, to help establish an effective process to identify patent eligible subjects, encouraging the filing of employee invention disclosures. We regularly attend Electronics Show (CES) to keep up with new products, services and emerging technologies.

Mr. O'Keeffe also has experience in securing and enforcing trademark rights both domestically and internationally, representing the U.S. Trademark Review Board (TTAB) and other trademark courts around the world.

In addition, we represent our clients in arbitration and litigation proceedings, including patent, trademark and copyright infringement litigation, to achieve effective dispute resolution for our clients, and to provide legal advice on a variety of intellectual property to help you make informed decisions and better manage risk.

Prior to joining MBHB, he worked as a software developer at the world's largest telecommunications company.
