Nelson is a native of Arvada, Colorado. His civil litigation practice focuses on appeals, business, insurance bad faith, and personal injury litigation. Nelson joined Burg Simpson in 2013 after several years running his own firm. He studied third-world history at Temple University (B.A., 1997) and United States history at New Mexico State University (M.A., 2000). Nelson earned his law degree at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law (J.D., 2007). He has practiced in Colorado trial courts, the Colorado Court of Appeals, the Colorado Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for Colorado, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
Nelson served as a Commissioner on and for 2 years as Chair of the Judicial Performance Commission for Colorados Second Judicial District. The Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives twice appointed him to serve on that Commission. Nelson serves as a member of the Amicus Curiae Committee of the American Association for Justice and on the Board of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, where he co-chaired the Amicus Curiae Committee from 2010-2018. Nelson currently chairs the Colorado Bar Association Appellate Subsections CLE Committee and will next serve as Vice-Chair of that committee before possibly chairing that committee again. He teaches continuing legal education classes on appellate and legal ethics/professionalism issues. Nelson enjoys skiing, hiking, and camping with his family.
