Bruce Downey was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1972. He received his A.B. in 1965 and his J.D. in 1972 from the University of North Carolina after service in the U.S. Navy, including a tour with the River Patrol Force in the Republic of Vietnam during 1967-68. Bruce was a member of Phi Delta Phi and was on the staff of The North Carolina Law Review. He received an LL.M. in Labor and Employment Law in 1977 from George Washington University while serving as resident partner in the firms Washington, D.C. office. Bruce is a native of Montgomery, Alabama but grew up on the coast of North Carolina. He is an avid sailor and has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on a forty-three foot sailboat.
While Bruce handles the full variety of labor law matters, including grievance arbitration and contract negotiations, and has appeared in many N.L.R.B. proceedings, the bulk of his practice is in the counseling of employers about employment law matters and defending employment law claims. Bruce has authored several employment-related publications, including employee handbooks for his various corporate clients and guides for various continuing education companies. He provides seminars for his clients on a wide range of topics. Bruce has been active in the Labor and Employment Section of the Alabama State Bar, including service as its chairman.
