John L. Rivkin represents leading insurance companies in complex disputes across the country and around the world.
Over more than 30 years of practice at Rivkin Radler, John has litigated and arbitrated environmental matters with a potential exposure exceeding $5 billion, involving contaminants such as MTBE, PCBs, TCE, PERC, arsenic, mercury, mold, and asbestos.
He currently is liaison counsel and steering committee counsel in some of the largest insurance coverage actions in the nation.
A U.S. Merchant Marine Officer who holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100 Ton Masters License, John also has substantial expertise in admiralty and maritime zoning matters. He was responsible for groundbreaking legal decisions preventing villages from regulating navigable waterways under British land patents dating back to the 1600s. Johns legal work paved the way for greater commercial usage of waterfront property, including usage by yacht clubs, marinas, and the maritime service industry.
John writes and lectures extensively on a broad range of complex insurance law issues. He is a member of the National Litigation Panel and a distinguished lecturer of law on complex insurance litigation at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he also has served for many years as a moot court judge.
An adjunct professor at Hofstra University School of Law, John teaches complex insurance litigation. In addition, he has served as a lecturer at the Practising Law Institute and has spoken before the National League of Cities, the Environmental Strategies Corporation, and the Society of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters.
