Steven Hurbis is an Associate at McKeen & Associates. Since his youth, Steven wanted to become a trial lawyer in order to stand up for those who could not protect themselves.
Steven joined McKeen & Associates after law school and was involved in several high-profile medical malpractice cases during his four years at his firm, reaching major settlements and judgments, including: a $1.25 million judgment (Smith v. Tuma MD); a $130 million judgment as second chairman (Tran v. William Beaumont Hospital); representing survivors of Larry Nassar in the $500 million settlement against Michigan State University; and several other settlements totaling $ 20 million.
Steven graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in political science. During his studies, Steven joined the EMU Mock Trial Association, where he participated in trial attorney competitions for three years and was awarded the Outstanding Attorney Award eight times and was named an All-Regional Attorney. During his time at Eastern Michigan, he received the Richard Ferens Scholarship for Outstanding Achievements in Litigation representation
Steven graduated Magna cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law, where he also excelled academically and professionally, receiving the school's prestigious Dr. Paul M. Lisneck Excellence in Trial Advocacy and Ethics Award; the Rickert Award for Excellence in the legal profession; and a full tuition scholarship for academic achievement. He was a member of the litigation team of the law school, where he was twice awarded the title of the best lawyer. He participated in both the Trial Advocacy and Moot Court competitions, winning the former in his first year and finishing fourth in the latter. In his third year, his team won his region and placed fifth in the nation at the American Association for Justice National Trial Team Competition.
While studying law, Steven represented clients in the Civil Litigation and Community Preservation Clinics of the College of Law, where he represented clients who were in danger of losing their home and successfully won an application that resulted in the largest sanctions in the history of the clinic.
Steven is an active member of the Michigan Association for Justice, the American Association of Justice, and a member of the Michigan and Illinois State Bar Associations. When he is not working for his clients, Steven can be found on the golf course, walking his two dogs or reading.
