About the lawyer
I was born in 1961 and am a native of Nashville, Tennessee. I am a founding partner of Smith Cashion Orr, PLC. I practice principally in the areas of architect and engineer professional liability, construction and commercial litigation, and asset recovery/subrogation law. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Western Kentucky University in 1984. During college, I worked as a co-op engineer for a large mechanical contracting company on several commercial and industrial projects. In 1987, I earned my Juris Doctor degree from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law where I served on the Honor Council. After graduating from law school, I practiced law with the Nashville firm of Manier, Herod, Hollabaugh Smith until co-founding Smith Cashion Orr, PLC in 1998. For over thirty years I have represented contractors, design professionals, owners, and property insurers in a wide range of matters involving design defects, construction defects, delay and inefficiency claims, and all types of casualty losses. I have substantial trial experience and have litigated in courts throughout the Southeast region at both the State and Federal level. I have also participated in numerous arbitrations as both a litigant and an arbitrator. I am active in several construction industry organizations. I am a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Associated General Contractors, and the Associated Builders and Contractors. I am also a member of the American Bar Association (Construction Law Forum), Tennessee and Nashville Bar Associations, and the Tennessee Association of Construction Counsel (Executive Committee, 2005). I have co-authored several publications relating to construction law, including Tennessee Law for Design Professionals, Tennessee Construction Defect Claims, Tennessee Construction Law, and Lien Laws for Design Professionals. I have also lectured extensively on issues involving design professionals, contractors, and sureties in seminars sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors, the Associated General Contractors, Lorman Education Services, and the National Business Institute.
