Brent has been a practicing patent attorney since 1996, focusing primarily on patent preparation and prosecution (both domestic and international), opinion work, and counseling matters. He has been practicing primarily in the mechanical and electro-mechanical arts, but also has significant experience in the areas of software and semi-conductors. Brent has enjoyed helping his clients protect utility and design innovations in a broad range of technologies, including: composite fabrication, construction, and repair, aerospace systems and components, process control valves and regulators, CNC machines and processes, electronic gaming machines, medical devices, consumer products, earth-moving equipment, geothermal heating/cooling systems, sewer maintenance and repair, radiographic devices, transmissions, emission control systems, dental implants, firearms, mechanical toys, vacuum-operated waste transfer systems, and fire suppression devices. More recently, Brent has collaborated with practitioners across von Briesens practice groups to provide legal advice to clients active in blockchain technology, particularly in the areas of tokenization, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and cryptocurrencies. Brent is skilled in all facets of patent prosecution, from drafting and filing applications, responding to Office actions, and proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and has extensive experience obtaining patent protection outside of the U.S.
Brent is a life-long resident of the Chicago area. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, Brent began his career as a mechanical project engineer at a company in Elgin, Illinois, designing auxiliary printing press and pollution control equipment. After obtaining his JD from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, cum laude, and prior to joining von Briesen, Brent worked at two large Chicago-based IP firms and co-founded a micro-boutique firm focusing on patent preparation and prosecution.
