About the lawyer
Tara joined BEAL, LLC in October, 2018 following a two-year clerkship with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina. Prior to her clerkship, Tara was in private practice for 23 years, representing financial institutions and other lenders in both commercial and consumer distressed debt matters, including debt collection actions, claim and deliveries, foreclosures, and suits against borrowers and guarantors. She has also served as a state court receiver, and counsel for a Chapter 11 trustee. Tara has completed the American Bankruptcy Institute and St. Johns University School of Laws 40-hour Bankruptcy Mediation Training, and is approved by the South Carolina Board of Arbitration and Mediator Certification to serve as a Circuit Court Mediator.
Tara is a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, but has maintained a statewide practice for more than 25 years, in addition to her other engagements in the national insolvency arena.
In 2012 and 2013, Tara was named the Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers? in Charleston, SC, for Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law. The publication also recognized her for Litigation-Bankruptcy, and Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law. Taras representative matters and experience include:
- Represented a borrower in the negotiation and implementation of a forbearance agreement involving a single asset real estate project.
- Represented an unsecured creditors committee in a Chapter 11 reorganization of a company engaged in the recovery of precious metals from discarded products.
- Represented a large financial institution in the Chapter 11 reorganization of a long-haul shipping company, negotiating adequate protection and plan treatment.
- Represented a financial institution in a bankruptcy case involving a failed mixed-use development.
- Represented a state charted bank in Chapter 12 matters involving struggling family farmers.
- Represented a regional financial institution in the negotiation and implementation of a forbearance agreement involving several complex commercial loans.
- Represented a trade creditor in numerous preference actions brought by debtors, creditor's trusts, or bankruptcy trustees, in various bankruptcy proceedings pending across the country.
Tara is the past president of the South Carolina Bankruptcy Law Association and is a Past Chair of the Carolinas Chapter of the International Womens Restructuring and Insolvency Confederation. She is a frequent speaker on bankruptcy and collection issues.
Tara is the past board chair of the Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates (SC Guardian ad Litem Project), and is a former Guardian ad litem. She also volunteers for the American Bar Association's «Free Legal Answers» and South Carolina Bankruptcy Court's «Ask-A-Lawyer» programs.
