Mr. Abeita was born and raised in Yakima. He was top of his class at Yakima Valley Community College, top of his class at Whitman College, and top 15 percent of his class at the University of Washington Law School. During college, he worked as a reporter for the Yakima-Herald Republic, the Walla Walla Union-Herald (owned by the Seattle Times) and the Seattle Post Intelligencer.
