Jeff has been trying business cases for more than 40 years. He has represented clients in federal and state courts throughout the United States. Much of his trial practice has focused on competition, meaning that many of his cases involve conduct among competitors and relate to issues such as antitrust, distribution, false advertising, trademarks, trade secrets and intellectual property. These cases often involve restraining orders and preliminary injunctions.
He has served as lead defense counsel in multiple class actions involving products liability, securities and employment. He served as defense liaison counsel in a multidistrict litigation case involving more than 100 class actions filed in the United States and Canada and related to the recall of pet food products. He served as lead defense counsel in twelve consumer class actions related to consumers sales practices relating to diapers.
Jeff has handled a variety of false advertising cases. He has litigated Lanham Act cases as a plaintiff and defendant. As a plaintiff, he has obtained temporary restraining orders to enjoin false advertising. He has handled numerous cases involving trade secrets, non-disclosure agreements and covenants not to compete.
Jeff has argued appeals to the Third, Sixth, Seventh and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals, as well as the Ohio Supreme Court.
A native of Dayton, Jeff has been recognized each year since its inception as an Ohio Super Lawyer, a statewide recognition and as one of the top 100 attorneys in the state. Jeff has been recognized as one of America's Top 100 High Stakes Litigators by America's Top 100 LLC. He is listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. He is recognized as both a Litigation Star and Labor and Employment Star by Benchmark, and repeatedly by Best Lawyers in America? as Lawyer of the Year. He has written articles for publication, and is a frequent lecturer at continuing legal education programs on various subjects relating to commercial litigation.
Increasingly, he has served as an arbitrator and a mediator for business and commercial disputes. He was selected as a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers and the Litigation Counsel of America. He is a member of the University of Dayton School of Law Advisory Council. He is also a member of the American, Ohio, Dayton and Cincinnati Bar Associations.
Through his practice of law, but also as a result of his commitment to the City of Dayton and its residents, Jeff was nominated as a Dayton Daily News Community Gem. In 2015, he organized and served as board chair of Friends of Levitt Pavilion in order to lead the fundraising effort to bring an outdoor music venue to the City of Dayton.
He has been very active in the local community as a Master of the Carl D. Kessler Inn of Court. He has served as an officer and President (2011-2012) of the Dayton Bar Association. The University of Dayton School of Law awarded him its Distinguished Alumni Award for his service to the community and profession. He also served ten years as the Mayor of a local suburb, and he has been involved in numerous charitable and not-for-profit activities.
