Brian graduated cum laude from the University of Alabama in 1976, B.S. degree/accounting major. He obtained his J.D. degree in 1979 from Cumberland School of Law and his LL.M. in Taxation (with honors) from the University of Alabama in 1985.

He was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1979 and also has been admitted to practice in the U. S. District Court for the Northern and Middle Districts of Alabama, the U. S. Tax Court, and the Fifth and Eleventh U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals
